It is made for wood stoves and multi-fuel stoves with a flat top. The fan starts turning when the stove top reaches about 120°F and turns faster as the stove gets hotter. It is not made for an open fireplace with no flat, hot top.

A thermoelectric module in the base turns the difference between the hot foot and the cooler fins into a small current that runs the motor. The hotter the stove, the faster it turns.
